Submitting Proof of Insurance Coverage for Stored Items
At Jones River Storage, we want to ensure your stored items are protected. If you choose not to enroll in our Safestor Tenant Insurance plan, you have the option to submit proof of insurance coverage from your personal insurance policy, provided it covers third-party or off-site storage. To ensure your personal insurance covers your stored items, please check your policy for the following:
What to Look For in Your Insurance Policy:
Coverage for Off-Site Storage: Most homeowners or renters insurance policies provide a level of protection for personal property stored away from your home or primary residence. Look for specific language such as:
- "Off-premises personal property coverage"
- "Personal property coverage for items stored in a third-party storage facility"
- "Extended coverage for property stored in commercial facilities"
Tip: Off-site storage is usually covered as a percentage of the total personal property coverage limit in your policy (e.g., 10% of your total coverage).
Covered Perils: Ensure that your policy covers the same risks that your stored items might face at Jones River Storage. Commonly covered perils should include:
- Fire, theft, and vandalism
- Weather-related events (such as wind, hail, or lightning)
- Water damage (excluding flood)
Confirm that these perils apply to your items stored off-site, and that no significant exclusions exist for third-party storage.
Exclusions: Carefully review any exclusions in your policy. Some policies may not cover certain types of items (e.g., jewelry, electronics, or art) when stored outside your home. Look for terms like:
- "Items stored in commercial facilities are excluded from coverage"
- "Coverage does not extend to self-storage units" If your policy includes such exclusions, your items might not be protected, and additional insurance through Safestor may be necessary.
Deductible: Keep in mind that your homeowner or renter’s insurance deductible may apply to off-site storage claims. This deductible might be higher than the value of the items you're storing, making a specialized tenant insurance plan like Safestor a more economical option.
How to Submit Proof of Insurance: If your policy provides sufficient coverage, you can submit proof to Jones River Storage for our records. Please provide the following documentation:
A copy of your insurance declaration page showing:
- The policyholder’s name
- The coverage limits for personal property
- Confirmation that the policy includes off-premises or third-party storage coverage
A signed statement from your insurance agent confirming that your stored items are covered for the risks mentioned above.
